A SHOPLIFTER who left a supermarket with more than £400 worth of goods in a trolley has been fined £80.
Paul Prentice, 60, entered Asda at Dunmail Park in Workington with a large empty trolley on October 13 last year.
Pamela Fee, prosecuting at Workington Magistrates’ Court, said the defendant filled the trolley with items to the value of £431.
He then went through the self-service checkout and made no attempt to pay. He was approached by security staff who recovered the items from him.
Prentice was banned from the store for three years. He was identified by police from CCTV footage. He gave ‘no comment’ throughout police interview.
The defendant was last before the court in September 2023 for shoplifting.
John Cooper, defending, said: “It’s not well executed. He was stopped by the exit. All items were recovered.
“It’s a guilty plea at the first opportunity. It’s been several months with no issue. He seems to be keeping on the straight and narrow.”
Prentice, of Churchill Place, Maryport, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop.
He was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
