DAVE Rotheram wants Workington Town to be fit and firing against table-topping Doncaster next Friday after enjoying a refreshing break over the weekend.

The Town boss has welcomed the weekend off, as it gives his squad the chance to recharge their batteries after an exhaustive early-season campaign.

“A weekend away means we have a fresh start next week, and it gives us a chance to reflect,” said Rotheram.

“The boys have been playing every week since the middle of January, which is a long time to keep going.”

The home game against Ellery Hanley’s side has been switched from Sunday, which Rotheram reckons could be a smart move.

“There will be cheap ticket prices, food and drink, and the club’s excited about the move,” he said.

“Playing on a Friday gives us the first call on people’s money over the weekend. There’s a lot of sense in that.”

First-team centre Mark Routledge had been due to turn out for the reserve-grade against visitors Batley today (2.30pm) but is being troubled by a back injury.

Mark McCully (back), Martyn Wilson (ankle) and Shaun Lunt (back) may all be in contention for the Doncaster match.

Dons’ Kiwi hooker Corey Lawrie was this week named NL2 Player of the Month for April, an award that was won by the club’s stand-off Kyle Briggs the previous month.

Assistant coach Tony Miller said: “It’s thoroughly deserved because Corey has been outstanding all year.

“He gives 100 per cent every match and is always on the front foot. We’ve got a few key players but he has certainly been one of them – he has been massive for us.”
