FIGHTING FIT

WORKINGTON Leisure Centre and Pool threw open its doors at the weekend, hosting a range of free activities designed to get more people fit and healthy.
People of all ages flocked to the Moorclose facility to try their hand at squash, badminton and gymnastics.
The two-day event was organised by the South Workington Partnership in a bid to persuade those in the area that might not normally attend the centre to come and have a go.
Sally Scales, community involvement worker for the partnership, said: “We took over the sports centre and got some funding to make it free and more accessible to people. We’re trying to promote a healthy lifestyle but taking the cost out of it.”
More than 100 people popped in on Saturday while many more took a dip on Sunday to cool off from the soaring temperatures.
Activities including trampolining, basketball and boxing proved the most popular, while the gym received a good work out and a bouncy castle provided fun for the little ones.
The partnership provided free priority leisure passes to people on low incomes, enabling them to use the leisure centre and pool in the future for half price. It also took passport pictures for families to bring down the cost even more.
