CARLISLE’S outgoing mayor has broken the record for the mayor’s charity fund – a tradition going back 40 years.

Cheque mates: Carlisle mayor Liz Mallinson presents £28,000 from the Carlisle Mayoral Charity Fund to local charities

Elizabeth Mallinson has raised a whopping £28,000 for eight local charities by holding 20 events over the past year.

It is the most money ever raised by the city’s mayor since the fund was set up in 1968.

The previous record of £23,972 was set by former mayor Judith Pattinson in 2004.

During her time in office Mrs Mallinson, Stanwix Urban Conservative councillor, has organised breakfast at the Great Fair, an abseil down the civic centre, a ball, Burns supper and race night.

The parish of St Augustine also donated £1,000 towards the total.

The main four charities to benefit – each receiving £6,750 and chosen personally by Mrs Mallinson – are Eden Valley Hospice; Hospice at Home, Carlisle and North Lakeland; the Royal British Legion, Carlisle and Stanwix branch; and Sunbeams Music Trust.

Mrs Mallinson, who presented the cheques at the civic centre yesterday, thanked everyone involved.

She said she chose the Eden Valley hospice because her mother died there, the Hospice at Home because her mother-in-law was nursed there, and the Sunbeams trust because of the “fantastic work” they do.

The Royal British Legion is a cause close to her heart, she added, because of the ‘inadequate accomodation and lack of money’ soldiers are faced with when returning home.

“I would like to thank everyone who has made my Mayoral Year such an enjoyable experience,” she said. “I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people.”

Last year’s mayor, Peter Farmer, raised £15,000 despite starting his year in office in a wheelchair after a knee operation.
