Funny old game: One Kelly in, one Kelly out

FUNNY old game. Just over a week after Neil Kelly returned to coaching with Leigh, brother Andy was axed by NL1 rivals Dewsbury.

Happier times: Dewsbury Rams coach Andy Kelly who led his side to NL1

Mrs Kelly did a good job with her boys. I’ve always found both to be bright, friendly and articulate.

But I guess the writing was on the wall for Andy when Dewsbury Rams were hammered 58-12 in the Cup by NL2 visitors Oldham at the weekend. They also lie bottom of the division, without a win in six outings.

Let’s not forget however that they were second-bottom of Division Two when he took the job. He went on to guide them to the NL2 title in 2006 and to the brink of the League One play-offs last term.

Andy was in his fifth season at the club, and coaches can sometimes stick around too long. But on leaving the Rams, he indicated that he still had an appetite for the game.

If I were a club chairman without a coach, he’d certainly be on my shortlist.
