Haven trial double

EX-WORKINGTON Town prop Steve Ormesher and Great Britain amateur centre John Patrick will debut for Whitehaven’s reserve-grade today after joining the club on four-week trials.

And coach Ged Stokes revealed that more potential new recruits are expected at the Recre this season, also on a trial basis.

“We will probably look at a few more like that now,” he said. “Coming in to a new environment, you have to like it.

“Steve Ormesher is big and physical. You can never have enough props and second-rows.

“When you look at teams like Halifax, they have big aggressive packs. One of the reasons they are winning games is because of their size, similar to Leigh. We have to match teams like that in size.”

Stokes saw Patrick, one the Cumberland League’s top talents, at close quarters when the coach helped out at Cockermouth, before taking over at Haven.

The county centre helped the club land the Division Two title and he grabbed a hat-trick for BARLA GB earlier this month.

Ormesher, who turned 30 last month, made 16 appearances for Town last term, including seven off the bench, scoring three tries.

The previous season he featured 17 times for NL2 Blackpool Panthers. He will face Featherstone at the Recre today (2.30pm), subject to receiving clearance in time from the RFL.

Kiwi pair David Fatialofa and Leroy Joe, who suffered broken arms against Leigh two weeks ago, are making strong recoveries, Stokes revealed. Both are expected to be back in contention in four or five weeks.
