HOSPITAL staff who deliver extraordinary levels of care to thousands of patients each year will be recognised for their achievements.

North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is to host the Celebrating Excellence NHS Awards 2008 to acknowledge excellence within hospital services provided from the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and the Penrith Birthing Centre.

It is the first time the trust has hosted such a prestigious event to promote North Cumbria’s talents locally, regionally and nationally.

It is also timed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the creation of the National Health Service.

Marie Burnham, chief executive of North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Every year, many thousands of patients in North Cumbria receive top quality care from our NHS staff, whose extraordinary commitment to others is inspirational.

“We have recently become the first trust in the UK to launch a specialist breast cancer/cardiology clinic.

“This was made possible after the North Cumbrian Community provided heart-scanning technology for our hospitals, and it has set an example to hospitals nationwide.

“We have many other areas of excellence in our hospitals yet in the past, we have not been very proactive in telling this good news to our community or celebrating the excellence of our staff.

“We want to change this by showcasing the work of our staff to ensure North Cumbria’s talents, abilities and innovation is recognised.”

The award ceremony will be held on June 12 at Rheged, near Penrith.

The winners of the local event will then be put forward for regional and national awards.
