AMEC has held an event in Whitehaven Civic Hall to celebrate the company’s 40 year association with Cumbria. The event was attended by a wide cross- section of the community, including the Mayor of Copeland, local councillors, representatives from local schools, supply chain members, local charities and a host of organisations from across the county.
The company first began its involvement with Cumbria back in 1968, when it helped develop the Penrith bypass. Since then it has been a key player in the development of the Sellafield site and also with BAE Systems at Barrow-in-Furness.
Gerry McGill, Vice President of Management and Operations in AMEC’s nuclear business, said the event celebrated AMEC’s involvement with the Cumbrian community over the past 40 years, and also pledged AMEC’s ongoing support to the region.
He added: “While we can all look back with pride over what has been achieved, we must ensure that West Cumbria plays a key role in the nuclear revival we are witnessing at the moment, with new nuclear power stations looming on the horizon, and the decommissioning programme at Sellafield gathering pace.
“It is AMEC’s intention to ensure that West Cumbria makes a cast iron case to reinforce its reputation as the nuclear centre of excellence, not only in the UK, but across Europe and beyond.
“AMEC brings unrivalled skills and technology to the table and, coupled with our first-rate relationship with the West Cumbrian workforce, together we can form a potent team to realise our ambitions.
“AMEC has been a major presence in West Cumbria for more than 40 years, and not only is it our firm intention to maintain our current level of operations on the Sellafield site and beyond, but we also plan to establish our Tier 1 operation headquarters in the county.
“The experience we gained through our oil and gas business in the North Sea, when we refocused our operations as the nature of the business changed, will be the driver for our plans for West Cumbria. It is AMEC’s intention that West Cumbria becomes a hub of a global nuclear industry, with the skills and expertise already here being utilised across the globe.
“It’s an exciting prospect and one that, with your help, we can turn into reality.”
AMEC Chief Executive Samir Brikho broadcasted a welcome message from a video link and there was a presentation of five awards to celebrate the partnership between AMEC and the Cumbrian community.
