Haines injury not as bad as first feared

Joe Haines will miss Workington Comets’ two Premier League matches this weekend - but is likely to be back in action sooner than expected.

Fit again: Joe Haines

Haines left King’s Lynn last night convinced he had broken his arm after a last race pile-up - a view that was shared by a paramedic. The 16-year-old was in a King’s Lynn hospital until 3-30am this morning and had TWO X-ray examinations on the damaged arm but neither picked-up any fracture.

Comets team boss Ian Thomas said: “The hospital people have told Joe that it looks like ligament damage in his forearm about five inches above the wrist.

“The arm had swollen badly by the time he got to the hospital but the two X-rays have not revealed a break, which has to be good news.

“He had a lot of ice on the arm at the hospital and he’s obviously going to take a little bit of time before he’s ready to get back on a bike, but it’s better news than we were expecting.”

The other better news for the Comets today is that Carl Stonehewer will ride on Saturday against the Isle of Wight after missing the last two and a half meetings with damaged ribs.

Thomas said: “He’s not pain free but he’s determined to give it a go. We have a match at Glasgow, too, on Sunday but for the moment we are only looking at Saturday.

“We are taking one match at a time.”

Workington will have to use rider replacement for Joe Haines at number four which means only Tomi Reima, Charles Wright and John Branney will be eligible.
