Workington Reds have arranged their first friendly of the pre-season - against county rivals Barrow.

But the game is to be played at Holker Street on August 2 a week before the two sides start their respective Blue Square programmes.

Workington had asked for a friendly at Borough Park but because of the fact that the majority of the Barrow squad live in Lancashire, the Bluebirds wanted a home game.

However, Barrow have agreed that gate receipts from the Saturday game will be shared - and the old Chas Kendall Trophy will be presented to the winners.

Reds boss Darren Edmondson said: “The clubs used to play on a regular basis for the trophy and we have agreed to re-activate that for this year’s game. Barrow have also agreed to play for the Trophy again next year at Borough Park.”

Workington have also agreed to play new Northern League members Whitehaven Amateurs at the County Ground on Tuesday, July 15.

Penrith Town and Kendal Town are other possible opponents, along with Durham City but Reds are anxious to confirm at least one ‘big’ home friendly before they commit to other dates.

Edmondson said: “Queen of the South have promised to come back to us later third week and I have also spoken with Morton and Middlesbrough, where there are possibilities of matches.

“I know Davie Irons pretty well at Morton and we will be discussing a friendly at Workington while Steve Agnew at Middlesbrough has promised to come back to me about a pre-season game as well.”

Reds will play any two from three - Annan Athletic, Stranraer and Ebbsfleet Utd - at a tournament being staged at Annan on July 19/20.
