Edmondson swoops for ex-Gretna kid Robinson

Workington Reds have added to their attacking options for next season with the capture of former Gretna teenager Dan Robinson.

The Penrith-born prospect, who can play up front or right-midfield, is boss Darren Edmondson’s first close-season signing, though more new faces are expected at Borough Park.

Robinson, 19, featured in Gretna’s first-team squad and made it on to the bench for several of last season’s Scottish Premier League games without making an appearance.

“When administration came and everyone got the chop, Dan was one of five or six of Gretna’s more promising apprentices that were kept on,” Edmondson said.

“He can play wide-right, which is an area we have been looking at. That’s not to say that Craig Johnston and David Hewson haven’t done a good job.

“It’s just that in certain games, when we are looking for a bit more of an attacking option, he available.

“Dan’s strong, has pace, and can go past people. He needs work but has a great attitude and is keen to learn. And he’s from Appleby, so he hasn’t got too far to travel.

“I believe he could have gone on trial to Livington or Dundee in the summer, but he’s chosen to start off with us, and hopefully he’ll get in the team and play in some games, as he has a lot of promise.”

Meanwhile, Edmondson has wished Reds’ reserve team boss Stuart Rome well after he resigned to become manager at a re-formed Gretna.

Under Rome last season, the reserves won the Lancashire League title and reached the Lancashire League Cup final, where beaten by Farsley Celtic.

“He’s from Gretna and I’m chuffed for him,” said Edmondson.
