Cheap swim scheme to be repeated

ALLERDALE council says its 10p a swim scheme has been such a success they will continue it during the summer holidays.

Junior swimmers took advantage of the scheme during the May half term holidays, making a total of 774 visits to swimming pools in the borough.

Children were offered 10p entry to the council-owned pools and many dived in; with 273 at Workington, 196 in Cockermouth, 202 at Wigton, and 103 taking a dip in the Netherhall pool in Maryport.

Allerdale Council joined forces with its leisure contracts partner, Carlisle Leisure Ltd, to run the scheme in a bid to get more children active and using the local swimming pools during the school holidays.

Children under the age of 16 could swim for just 10p during public sessions at the pools.

The scheme, now into its sixth year, will be repeated in the summer holidays.
