Happy Hour at city pub

Three short comedy dramas are being performed in Carlisle next week – but not in their usual setting. The plays are being staged by new drama group the Happy Hour Theatre Company – and are being put on at the King’s Head, in Fisher Street, on Monday and Tuesday evening.

Happy Hour has been set up by Rob Graham, Bob McLure and Jenny Pike, all members of Green Room Theatre Club, along with former professional actress Allison Rowe.

Their aim is to bring drama to wider audiences by taking it out of theatres and performing in alternative venues such as pubs and village halls.

The plays they put on will not require much set or many props and so that they can easily be moved around the region – and so that audiences can enjoy a drink while they watch.

The comedies are by Jean McConnell and are entitled Cupboard Love, Cruise Missile and Doggies.

Each one is in the form of a dialogue between two women sitting on deck chairs – the only props needed – and are directed and performed by Jenny and Allison. Jenny said the humour in all three was reminiscent of Victoria Wood and Catherine Tate and would appeal to all tastes.

There will be 15-minute interviews between each short drama to allow audience members to buy a drink. The three plays are also being performed at the Bowness-on-Solway literary festival tomorrow.

Jenny said: “A lot of people are a bit put off by the theatre. But this will be a more relaxed, informal setting and we hope to get audiences who wouldn’t usually come to the Green Room or other theatres.”

The group are planning to stage the John Godber comedy Weekend Breaks in October.

Next week’s performances begin at 7.30pm. Tickets, which cost £5 each and include a pint of beer or a soft drink, are available at the bar now, on the door or by calling 07773 408909.
