Blues' Joyce signs new one-year deal

Carlisle United midfielder Luke Joyce has agreed a new contract with the Blues – and earned a big vote of confidence from boss John Ward.
The former Wigan man, a bit-part player over the last two seasons at Brunton Park, will sign a one-year deal when the squad returns for pre-season training on Thursday.
And Ward insisted he will have no hesitation in picking the inexperienced 20-year-old over more established midfield rivals if he impresses in United’s programme of friendlies.
“Luke had limited chances last year because the team had been pretty consistent and done well,” said Ward.
“But whenever I have watched him in training and playing for the reserves, his attitude has been spot-on and I feel there is a good young player there who wants to do well.
“He has decided another year here is something he can handle rather than look for somewhere else.
“It is tough to break into the midfield because there are some good players here, but I have told him that when the players come back on Thursday it is every man for himself from the beginning.
“He has seen people like Gary Madine and Darren Campion get their chance in the team and if Luke takes his chance in pre-season I certainly won’t be afraid to keep him in there.”
Joyce endured a frustrating campaign last term with Chris Lumsdon, Paul Thirlwell, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and Grant Smith all ahead of him in the pecking order.
He made just one start and two sub appearances, playing a key role in the stunning 3-2 comeback win over Port Vale in January when he scored shortly after coming off the bench.
Joyce, signed by Paul Simpson in 2006, was used more frequently by previous manager Neil McDonald who handed the former JJB Stadium youngster his Blues debut in the 2006/7 season.
The midfielder recently admitted this is his make-or-break season at United and he may seek a loan move if he fails to force his way into favour.
Scottish midfielder Smith has also been offered a one-year deal by Ward and will discuss the new terms with the United boss today.
Ward, back from a week’s holiday in Portugal, said he is excited about the onset of pre-season and pledged that all his players would get their chance to impress ahead of the opening league game at Bristol Rovers on August 9.
“I can’t tell you what my team at Bristol Rovers will be,” said the manager. “Pre-season is a good observation period. I’m raring to go and I expect the players will be too.”
