Purple house fire was not arson, say police

POLICE say they have found no evidence that the blaze which gutted the famous purple house in the Newlands Valley near Keswick earlier this week was started by arsonists.
A spokesman said: “There is no evidence that it was deliberate and we have closed our investigation.”
The former home of Varya Vergauwen once provided lodgings for actors like Bob Hoskins and Tom Courtenay, when they were appearing at Keswick’s Century Theatre.
It was also a base for poet laureate Ted Hughes and a host of well known authors and climbers.
The property was bought last year for £470,000 by Surrey businessman Charles Carter, who has planning permission to build two houses on the site.
Monday’s blaze reduced Rigg Beck to a pile of ashes, with only one gable end of the wooden property left standing.
