Back Carlisle's new owners, says Fred

Departing Carlisle United owner Fred Story today broke his silence on the sale of the club by urging fans to get behind the new four-man Blues regime.

The news Story has sold his controlling share to existing directors David Allen, Andrew Jenkins, John Nixon and Steve Pattison was met with a lukewarm response from the United faithful, but Story said the club was in safe hands.

“The board have my full backing,” said Story.

“People have got to realise that running a football club is a tough job – I know that better than anybody.

“If people care about Carlisle United, they should back the four people who are there and who without doubt have the best interests of Carlisle United at heart.”

Story is yet to go into detail on the takeover and the reasons why he opted to sell to the four directors rather than other interested parties, one of whom was former owner John Courtenay.

The construction millionaire will remain involved with the club as one of its major sponsors but will not be on the new board.

Manager John Ward also welcomed the new regime at Brunton Park.

The Blues boss was given a resounding vote of confidence by the new regime yesterday and Ward is confident the club can continue to build on the success of the Fred Story era.

“We all know each other well enough to be able to say we can work together,” said Ward.

“In terms of the progression of Carlisle United, these four men know what is required and feel they can work with the current staff and players, and that is key.

“They are keen to keep things moving along and that is pleasing to hear.

“I told the players and staff on Thursday morning what was happening, and everyone is fine with it.

“It has been awkward for a short while mainly for the supporters, because there have been different things speculated on, but I don’t go along with the idea that it can be disturbing for ourselves.

“We are football people and we do whatever is required, whether it is Fred Story, the current group or someone else in charge of the club.

“But it’s vital it has happened now and supporters don’t feel they are in limbo. The football club as a whole can move on now.”

Although Ward has not yet had detailed discussions with the new regime on whether his transfer budget will be affected by the takeover, the manager is confident he will get the backing he needs.

“This is a good squad of players, it’s not too far away.
