Legend Chuck rides again

AMERICAN moto-cross legend Chuck Sun gave Cumbrian fans a treat as he swept to comfortable wins in three races on a special visit to Bassenthwaite.

The over-50s Twinstock world champ, who lives in Las Vegas, belied his age as he rode to victory in the over-40 class at the Whittas Park meeting.

“In the off-road world he’s something between Michael Schumacher and Stirling Moss,” said Papcastle-based Bill Brown, the over-60s Twinstock world champion.

“He’s held in high esteem. He will be 51 or 52 and walked all three of his races.

“You just had to watch him. And he’s a really nice guy. He loves riding motorbikes and he’s great company, full of stories and fun.”

Sun, American National champion as far back as 1980, went on to present the trophies to successful riders.

Brown captured the over-60 world title at the same meeting in Pontrilas, Hertfordshire, last month, as Sun took the over-50 event.

“I enjoy every race I do,” said the Cumbrian, the world distributor of Wulfsport off-road clothing, based at Lillyhall. “I feel less like stopping now than 30 years ago.”
