Ex-soldier Patrick ready to do battle with Crusaders

Ex-soldier John Patrick has pledged not be overawed on his huge televised debut for Whitehaven against title-chasing Celtic Crusaders today (4.15pm).
The big centre was starring in the Cumberland League Second Division for champs Cockermouth last season.
But coach Ged Stokes has given him a huge vote of confidence with a place on the bench at Brewery Field.
“One of the best ways to learn is to test yourself against the best side,” said Patrick. “I just hope I get on the pitch, that’s the main thing.”
Patrick recently signed a contract until the end of the campaign, but Stokes clearly believes he has a longer-term future in the pro ranks.
The coach added: “It’s a good time to see how he performs in the first-team. He’s been very consistent in the reserve-grade, scoring in every game. He’ll see what he needs to do in the off-season to continue to step up.
“He’s also played at a high level for BARLA and I don’t see him having any problems.”
Today’s forecast in south Wales is for wet weather, which Stokes believes will suit his rugged pack.
“Some teams under-rate our pack, when they look at it on paper, but they do that at their peril,” added Stokes who guided Haven to a 44-16 home win over Celtic in April.
“To do the double over a team like this would be fantastic. But that last win will force them in to taking nothing for granted.
“Hooker Neil Budworth is a real threat down the middle, and Tony Duggan is a very astute support player, with a turn of pace most can’t match. So our defence has to be switched on.”
Full-back Duggan has touched down in six consecutive games, scoring nine tries. The match can be watched through Sky TV on S4C.
