Tyrone Cameron took his first step towards earning a contract with Carlisle United by catching the eye of boss John Ward in last night's 3-1 friendly win at Chester City.

Goals by Scott Dobie, Gary Madine and Simon Hackney saw Carlisle grind out a hard-earned victory on a night when Cameron's credentials were given a thorough examination by hard-running home winger Kevin Ellison.

Ward was encouraged by how London-born Cameron, 18, who is on trial at Brunton Park following his release by Fulham, coped with the challenge.

The Carlisle manager said: "He's a decent little player, I'm pleased with him.

"He's got a super, super attitude. He came all the way up from London on his own on the train on Sunday and got himself here to try and further his career.

"Tonight he's shown that determination on the pitch so we're pretty pleased from what we've seen from that kid." Ward added: "This will be the biggest game the young man's played in. He's been in reserve team and Academy football, which is nice football - it's not really as tough as this, against people with the experience Chester have put in. I'm pleased with that."

Ward was also pleased to see Carlisle extend their unbeaten pre-season run.

"We've played the three games now and are unbeaten in all there - all away from home," he said. "I think that's key.”

Ward reported no fresh developments on the Joe Garner saga. The 20-year-old striker, who is currently injured, has been attracting interest from Nottingham Forest and has a £1.14 million release clause in his contract.

Ward sidestepped questions on Garner's future, saying: "Everything for me has been geared up towards getting this game.

"Obviously our directors who have been here have been dealing with that sort of thing."
