13 drink-drivers are caught

POLICE have warned they will continue to target drink-drivers after a two-week campaign in which 13 motorists were caught over-the-limit.

Officers in Dumfries and Galloway also revealed a worrying trend of people crashing their cars while breaching road alcohol laws.

There were four more drink-drivers stopped during this summer’s crackdown in south west Scotland than in 2007.

These included a 23-year-old man who will appear in court also accused of taking a car without permission and disqualified driving.

In one of the other more striking incidents, a 17-year-old girl was found to have more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her breath after her car had left the road and ploughed into a fence.

A man was also stopped on the motorway at about midday and found to be over the drink-drive limit.

The campaign ran from July 14 until Monday.

Sergeant Scott McLachlan said: “Can I again make it clear that although the campaign has ended we will continue to enforce the drink drive legislation? This year we have caught 166 drink drivers with just under half of those caught as a result of members of the public calling us or as a result of crashes.

“We would appeal to the public to continue to call us if they suspect someone is drink driving.”
