Fab five head for Lowther

FIVE of Cumbria's top riders have been invited to take part in the Invitational Show Jumping classes held as part of the Lowther Country Fair on Saturday.

Pride of Cumbria: Mayhem III and Ruth Edge, above, during the cross-country event in The Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park, the Gloucestershire home of the Princess Royal.

It'll be an exciting spectacle, with Jon Fletcher, Jonathan Dixon, Louise Alston, Rachel Walker and Simon Buckley going up against the likes of Geoff Billington, Karl Curtis, Laura Stephenson and Paul Barker.

The Snooker class will be held on Saturday morning with the 1.40m Open in the afternoon. Both classes will be in the main ring.

Cockermouth Show saw some fine performances, notably from Katie Walker who has made a seamless transition from ponies to horses.

She took the Newcomers/1.10 Open with Cassius Z and the 1.10 Open on Pamiro Z, putting in calm and controlled performances with both horses.

Margaret Kendall won the Foxhunter/1.20 Open with Wellview Alldatus, ahead of Logan Creighton on Vivaldi.

Winning the British Eventing Open Championship at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe must have been a considerable sweetener for Ruth Edge who can now only watch the Olympics from afar. She led right from the start on Mayhem III to take her second win at this prestigious event – the first being four years ago on Two Thyme.

Ruth also came second in the EHOA-Martin Collins Intermediate Championship on Zakarius, just six marks behind Oliver Townend who won the class for the second year running, this time on ODT Land Vision.

Melissa McCarron's secured herself a place in the final of the Junior Foxhunter with K E C Bustino Clover after competing in the second round at the Scottish Home Pony International.

Melissa had just missed out on qualifying at the Port Royal Equestrian Centre, but finished fourth which gave her a place in the Junior Foxhunter Masters final at the Scope Festival.

There was stiff competition at Cumbria Riding Club Working Hunter but Emily Cottam met all challengers and held on to her title of Champion Working Hunter with Beyond Question.

Emily also rode Yvonne Shelley's beautiful Andalusian Alto Baby Doc to victory in the Novice class.

The Reserve Championship went to Mandy Antins and her eyecatching bright bay 17.1 Danish Warmblood Lothar Boesgard – a horse now enjoying a third career as a Riding Club steed, having already enjoyed success as a showjumper in his native Denmark and then dressage.

Karen Powell of Santon Bridge rejoined the Riding Club this season and was delighted to take third place in the Novice with Irish Sports horse Tia – especially since she's been off the competitive scene for around 25 years.

Members of the Cumberland Farmers Hunt North had a very successful trip to Charleton-in-Cleveland for the Area 2 Dressage Competition. Amy Wybergh, Holly Wybergh & Rebecca Graves won the Novice Section & have qualified to go to the National Championships in Cheshire at the end of August.

In the Junior Section, Robyn Wolfe came 5th in her Arena.
