Man arrested in Workington rape probe

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape at Workington’s Headlands Close.

He was arrested in connection with the third serious sex attack in the town over the past month.

Detectives say they are not connecting the attack on August 16 to two others in the town.

The first was when a 16-year-old girl was walking alone along Mossbay Road between 10pm and 10.30pm on July 31 when a man approached her.

He talked to her before dragging her off the road and behind nearby bushes, where he subjected her to a serious sexual assault.

Another 16-year-old girl was attacked in Hunter Street on August 11. Police have not ruled out a link between that and the Mossbay incident.

The man, who is from Manchester, was bailed until September 25.
