Workington retain cricket league title

Workington secured the North Lancs & Cumbria Cricket League championship for the second year running – despite some last minute flutters against Penrith on Saturday.

At the Ernest Valentine Ground, Workington regained their title by just one wicket in a nail-biting finale to their season.

Visitors Penrith were put into bat and they picked up 159-9 thanks to professional Upal Fernando hitting 60.

Simon James was Workington’s top bowler with good figures of 5-33 from his 15 overs.

Workington looked on track to record an easy win as pro Simon Beare and opener Callum Moffat put together a strong second wicket partnership of 73 before Moffat fell to the bowling of Fernando for 29.

Beare then struggled to keep partners at the crease and he eventually fell with his side on 128-6, as he was caught for 69.

Workington were slipping but it was the last two batsmen on the books that finally pulled them through.

Kyle Galea and Adam Walker came together with the score on 155-9 in the 41st over and picked off the last five runs for the win.

Cleator look set to remain in second, after they picked up an easy nine wicket victory over Cockermouth at Sandair.

The home side took to the crease but struggle to score until pro Shamila Gamage (42) helped steady the ship, with the aid of Neil Mandale (35) but they still all fell with the score on 127.

Cleator captain David Rooney did most of the damage with figures of 3-31, alongside two wickets apiece for Simon Wilson, pro Paul Duffet and Ian Clark.

Duffet and opening batsman Graham Clark then went on to bring the Cleator ship home, Duffet carrying his bat for 83 with Clark just being caught out off the bowling of Gareth White for 43.

But in came Chris Quin to help Duffet make their target on 128-1.

Millom slipped away from Cleator further when they lost out at home to Dalton.

Dalton posted 226-8 in their allotted overs, Justin Quint leading the way from the start with a superb century, before being caught out on 116.

Millom then just ran out of steam on 125, Graham Dawson top scoring with 39.

Whitehaven’s match with Haverigg was abandoned.

Keswick clinched a winning draw at Furness after racing to 206-8 in the opening innings of the game.

Darren Collin (50) and Glen Weightman (51) set the Keswick innings off well with a fine opening partnership and John Mason added a further 43.

Mark Daly had the best bowling figures for Furness with 3-57.

In reply, Furness held on for the draw by the skin of their teeth on 179-9. Glen Capstick (37) and Majid Jahangir (67) were the mainstays of their innings.

Simon Dowson (3-22) and Dinuka Hettiarachchi (3-39) did most of the damage for Keswick.

Carlisle lost out in their battle at Duddon Sports Club in a low scoring game. Duddon opened and posted 129-9, Steven Johnson claiming 3-29 and Chris Foxcroft 3-8. But Carlisle could not hang on to record a victory as they slumped to 101 all out as Graham Stevenson picked up four wickets for just eight runs.

In division one, Lindal Moor remain top of the league, with one game remaining, as they defeated Wigton by eight wickets.

Wigton were dismissed for just 54 as Colin Knight (3-11), Andrew Parkinson (3-15 and J Zia (3-13) ripped through the batting attack.

Lindal reached 55 for the loss of just two wickets and are four points clear of their nearest rivals Kirkby, in second, with Wigton in third.

Kirkby won again, with a nine runs between themselves and Vickerstown at the end of the game.

Paul Tyson (62) top scored for Kirkby as they reached a disappointing 126 at home.

In reply, Vickerstown were stopped just short of their target, on 117 as R Tyson claimed 5-15.

Cleator Seconds secured a winning draw over Hawcoat Park, their total of 140-9 being enough to see off the visitors.

Steven Wishart (31) led the way for Cleator before Hawcoat Park clung on at 105-9 to take a share of the spoils.

Egremont went down by 40 runs at the hands of Ulverston at Gillfoot Park.

Ulverston batted first and amassed 104 before they capitulated to the bowling of Richard Booth (5-18 and Dave Raynor (3-22).

But Egremont’s batting line-up could not repeat their bowlers’ success as they crashed all out for just 64.

Workington lost six wickets in reaching 145 led by Stephen Miller with an unbeaten 65 and Paul McKeown’s 34.

T Sampath did the damage for Appleby, collecting 7-13 while Andrew Appleby picked up a five wicket haul for Keswick, for the loss of 32 runs.

Windscale lost to Lindal at a very wet Falcon Field in a second division clash. Batting first the visitors scored a creditable 102-9 thanks to a dogged 28 from Din Bandara and despite the best efforts of Gavin Pickering (3-23) and Stewart Todhunter (5-12).

Windscale then imploded, collapsing to 7-4 at one stage before Peter Lancaster and Ian Van Mourik finally put a partnership together.

But again another collapse saw the home side bowled out for 53 with Lancaster top scoring along side Graeme Campbell with 13. Jordon Hughes was the pick of the young visitors' bowling attack finishing with 4-16.
