Workington speedway in Knock-Out Cup final after beating Edinburgh

Workington Comets dented Edinburgh Monarchs treble prospects to book their place in the Knockout Cup final.
Saturday’s enthralling 53-39 home win over the new Premier League champions gave the Comets victory on aggregate over the two legs by 94-88.
But dates for the two-legged final against Somerset have not been agreed and it could need the BSPA to sort out when the two matches are raced.
Comets team manager Ian Thomas said: “I think it’s fair to say that both clubs want to ride the second leg at home.
“But it’s the perfect scenario, as we showed with Edinburgh this week-end, that the Friday track stages the first meeting and the Saturday track hosts 24 hours later.
“Mike Golding the Somerset promoter, who happens to be a smashing bloke, has suggested coming to Workington on Saturday, October 11 and staging the return at Somerset on Friday, October 17.
“I haven’t agreed to that and it’s possible the whole think might have to be settled by the BSPA.”
Thrown into the mix is the fact that Edinburgh and Somerset – two Friday tracks – have been paired in the semi-final of the League play-offs and haven’t agreed dates for those matches.
Workington, themselves, are involved in the Young Shield starting this weekend – with a Friday/Saturday showdown. They travel to Scunthorpe on Friday and host the Scorpions the following night.
Saturday’s victory over Edinburgh has raised the prospect of the Comets landing their first seven-man team silverware in the clubs history.
For owner Keith Denham that would crown what has already been a remarkable first year in charge with the Best Pairs and Fours trophies already on the sideboard.
“We are holding our annual end-of-season presentation night on November 14 and it would be terrific to have four trophies on display.
“I thought the team rode superbly over the two legs and deserved the aggregate victory over a very good Edinburgh side. The home leg was a terrific meeting and it all went down to the last race,” said Denham.
Team manager Thomas added: “In some ways that has to be the best night of the year so far because we had to beat the League champions to get through.
“Every member of the side gave everything in the cause against an Edinburgh team who were desperate to win themselves. It made for a great speedway meeting.”
