LISA McManus, 30, an advertising manager at Financial Times originally from Carlisle and Martin Smith, 31, an advertising director at the Associated Newspapers. They live in Twickenham.

HOW THEY MET: They worked together on the Evening Standard in 2001.

PROPOSAL: Sunset in Central Park, New York in November 2007.

VENUE: Great Fosters in Egham, Surrey on June 1.

THEME: Black and ivory dress code.

BRIDE’S OUTFIT: A Monique Lhuillier fish-tail dress with beading across the bodice and buttons down the back, tiara and veil from Browns Brides, London.

GROOMSMEN: Sasan Rhooi was best man. The bride’s uncle Gary McManus, David Bagshaw and Craig Scott were ushers. The groom wore a Gucci suit while the groomsmen wore tuxedos from Greenwoods, Carlisle.

BRIDESMAIDS: Rachel Middlemas, Sarah Jane Gear, both 33, and the bride’s sisters Laura Birrell, 23, and Jenna Birrell, 21,were bridesmaids. They wore John Lewis black evening gowns. The bride’s cousin Phoebe McManus, six, was a flowergirl and wore an ivory John Lewis dress.

FLOWERS: A hand-tied bouquet of akito roses with long stems bound with black ribbon. The bridesmaids had smaller versions. Phoebe had a rose pomander. All from the Divine Flower Company.

RECEPTION: A Champagne reception at Great Fosters in the Painted Hall and gardens, and a wedding breakfast in the Tithe Barn for 100 guests.

TABLE SETTINGS: Tall martini glass vases with ivory rose semi-spheres placed on top. Rose spheres surrounded by glass candles. Ivory rose petals were scattered on each table.

FAVOURS: Mini bottles of Champagne with straws, also used as name tags.

CAKE: A white chocolate orange, Cointreau and cream cake with slabs around the outside decorated with an ivory rose sphere and black ribbon – from Linda Fripp Designs, of Wiltshire.

FIRST DANCE: Ordinary People by John Legend.

ENTERTAINMENT: A string quartet during the ceremony. A band and disco.

HONEYMOON: Santorini in Greece.
