Dave Rotheram is to use his World Cup trip to scout for fresh overseas talent for Workington Town.

The Town coach’s main job when he jets out to Australia on Tuesday is to assist coach Steve McCormack with the Scotland squad.

But he will also use the opportunity to look at potential new recruits for the NL2 outfit, and he will link up with former Town boss Peter Walsh, who has guided a handful of players to Derwent Park, when Scotland face Fiji.

“It’s a case of getting over to Australia, settling down, and then seeing who’s available,” Rotheram said.

“I’m looking for a prop, and a stand-off would be nice, but it has got to fit in with us.

“We have two quota places available, and Andrew Beattie has taken one of those. We must also use the other one wisely.

“I’m sure we’ll be bumping in to agents all over the place over there. Peter Walsh rang me yesterday, and our game against Fiji will be played pretty close to where he lives, so he and James Pickering are coming to that game.”

Town have signed scrum-half Steve Roper, who played 13 times for NL1 Widnes this term, to replace Liam Campbell, who last week joined home-town club Barrow. But they have still to find a new No 6 following Carl Forber’s move to Rochdale.

Goal-kicker Forber scored in every game for Town this season.
