Woman who dropped cigarette in Workington town centre must pay £290

A Maryport woman must pay £290 after dropping a cigarette end in Workington town centre.

Kellie Lamb, 18, of Buttermere Road, failed to appear in court yesterday after dropping the stub on Campbell Savours Way.

In a case brought before West Allerdale Magistrates’ Court, Workington, magistrates heard how Lamb was stopped by one of Allerdale Council’s environmental wardens who was on a foot patrol outside the Home Bargains store on July 3.

The environmental warden cautioned Lamb for committing the offence of littering under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and issued her with a fixed penalty fine of £75, to be paid within 14 days of the offence. It was also noted that the nearest litter bin was opposite Home Bargains.

Lamb was given the option of paying a discounted fine of £60 within 10 days of the offence.

Because no payment was received within 14 days she was sent a letter on July 25, offering her a further seven days to pay the full amount, or face possible prosecution.

Magistrates were told that payment had still not been received so Allerdale council was left with no option but to take legal action.

Ms Lamb, who did not appear in court, was found guilty in her absence by magistrates. She was fined £200 and ordered to pay £75 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Have your say

We have got pensioners dying due to lack of heating and a paltry "winter payment" from the generous government, but at least they will die knowing that the cigarette litter "yobs" were duely punished by a marauding environmental warden on foot patrol!!

Maybe they should be checking the local pensioners are warm and safe at home instead of this lunacy!

Serves her right, the whole affair was brought on by her own disregard for the law and downright laziness, the fine should have been more!
