A man has been bailed by police after a collision which left an eight-year-old boy with serious injuries.
The boy, Joseph Jacob Hunt, known as JJ, was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven after police said he was struck by a Vauxhall Frontera on Saturday.
The collision happened on Grasmere Avenue at 11.50am outside JJ’s house.
A 41-year-old Workington man was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of dangerous driving. He has been bailed to return to Workington Police Station on January 2.
JJ's father, Gary Edmonds, had been in his house when the collision happened.
He said: “When I was told about it I feared the worst. One of the witnesses had to phone for an ambulance.
“He was lying there screaming in pain. He was struggling. Witnesses said the car went over him. JJ was going to see his friend across the road.
“He had injuries to his stomach and his groin.”
He said JJ, a pupil at Westfield Infant School, had a broken collar bone, extensive bruising, abrasions and that skin had come off his stomach and his kidneys stopped working temporarily.
He also had cuts and scrapes to his head, and cuts to the right of his stomach.
His son had swelling to his head yesterday and doctors were planning on carrying out a CT scan today.
Mr Edmonds said: “He was improving yesterday. He was acting more like himself.
“He was in a lot of pain last night. It is going to take a while for him to return to normal. We have lots of support from family and friends.”
A police spokesman added: “The child sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital where his condition is described as being stable.”
The road was closed for six hours on Saturday while an investigation was carried out.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They should phone the force’s western roads unit on 0845 3300247.
