Workington Reds have been given a huge boost after defender Kyle May agreed to stay at the club.

Blue Square North high-flyers Harrogate Town approached chairman Humphrey Dobie about the availability of the influential May earlier in the week. Dobie told manager Darren Edmondson who informed May about the offer at training on Thursday night.

May, 26, insisted he has no desire to leave Borough Park and said he was happy to keep playing for Workington, to the delight of everyone at the club.

Harrogate are said to have been keen admirers of the former Carlisle United youth product since he helped Workington keep two clean sheets in the FA Cup and one in the league this season.

Dobie had informed his opposite number Bill Fotherby that any deal involving May would require a transfer fee.

This is not the first approach that the Borough Park club has received for one of his prize assets.

May, who has been in sensational form this season, was the target for Cumbrian rivals Barrow in the summer but the Blue Square Premier club failed to stump up the cash Reds wanted.

May took his place in the starting line-up for this weekend’s amazing 4-4 draw with Hyde United.

Jonny Wright, 22, making his first start for more than a month, netted twice during the high-scoring fixture, but said he was gutted not to win the match.

He said: “It was good to score again but the lads were gutted not to win the game.”
