Stars of the literature and broadcasting worlds, ranging from Sandi Toksvig to Barnsley Bard Ian McMillan, are lined up to appear at next year’s Words by the Water festival in Keswick.
The programme for the festival, which runs from February 27 to March 8, was announced today at the Theatre by the Lake, the venue which hosts the event.
Comedy will play an important part in the 2009 festival, with the likes of Robin Ince, Stuart Maconie, Sandi Toksvig and Ian McMillan all scheduled to make an appearance.
Sandia Toksvig will present her new one-woman show and introduce her audience to the many facets of her work. She will be sharing her worldwide adventures through conversation, comedy, questions and answers and some wry observations on life, love, families, politics and people.
Other well known personalities appearing at the festival include Woman’s Hour presenter Jenni Murray, who will describe growing up in the 50s and 60s and more recently her experience of being diagnosed with cancer, and Radio 4 presenter Ed Stourton, dealing with the minefield of political correctness.
The list of speakers ranges from Pru Leith and Polly Toynbee to some of the country’s finest novelists, such as Kate Atkinson, Lionel Shriver, Helen Dunmore, Louis de Bernieres, Justine Picardie and Cumbria’s own Melvyn Bragg, the festival’s president.
Today’s launch also revealed that some of the regular speakers at the Keswick literature festival, Kate Adie, Michael Buerk and newly appointed spokesman for older people, Joan Bakewell, are in the 2009 line up.
Joint festival director Kay Dunbar said it was the intention to bring the best contemporary writers and thinkers to the Lake District, an area rich in literary tradition.
Booking for Friends of the Theatre by the Lake opens on December 16 with general bookings starting on January 5 at the theatre box office, tel 017687 74411 or online at www.theatrebythelake.com.
