Distington, Kells, Ellenborough and Salterbeck Storm all overcame their rivals in the opening round of this prestigious competition.

And there could be more to come as Broughton Red Rose’s clash against Parkside Golborne had to be postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. It will be played next weekend.

Cockermouth’s clash with Middleton was abandoned by the referee 25 minutes into the game, with BARLA awaiting the referee’s report to make a judgement. Seaton could not raise a side to travel to Elland so they handed the tie to their opponents.

Back to our successful sides and Distington overcame Glasson by just two points in all-Cumberland League tie.

It was a low scoring game with Distington just edging the home side 6-4.

At half-time Glasson were ahead thanks to a Brian Pattinson try but the goalkicking proved to be the difference between the two sides.

After the break, Daniel Dryden touched down for Distington and Clayton Sutton tagged on the extras which proved vital at the final whistle.

Ellenborough have a good history in the National Cup and they continued to the next stage after disposing of visitors Batley Boys 26-12.

It was close up until half-time with the two sides deadlocked at 8-8 but Elbra pulled away in the latter stages to secure victory.

Jamie Watson, Eddie Robinson, Craig Holdsworth and Dean Scholey all picked up tries for the Maryport-based side, with Stephen Stoddart converting three and adding two penalties.

Kells travelled to Rylands, winning 28-6. The league leaders made sure of the match by half time with an opening flurry of tries.

Barry Boyd, Tony Burns and Sean Flanagan all touched down in the opening 20 minutes with Burns converting the last.

Ashley McDonald then added a further try on 33 minutes with Burns collecting his second shortly after and converting both for a 26-0 half time lead.

Rylands were the only side to score a try in the second half and Kells just added a Burns penalty to wrap up the win.

Salterbeck Storm had a tough tester against Knottingley but they managed to scrape home 26-24.

Ross Cape, Martin Harvey, Liam Wilson, Ross Thompson and Paul Dobinson were the try scorers for the Storm.

Lee Jardine wrapped up the win with three conversions.

The draw for the second round was made on Saturday night and sees eight local sides potentially at home.

Salterbeck earned the right to host visitors Ovenden, while Hensingham will entertain Upton and the winners of the Broughton v Parkside tie will be at home to Oulton.

Kells are kept off the road in this round, as they will host Widnes St Maries, while either Cockermouth or Middleton entertain Thatto Heath.

Ellenborough are drawn at home to Castleford Panthers and Great Clifton will welcome West Leeds.

Egremont will go for a repeat of their National Conference division two fixture at the weekend when they host Stanley Rangers once more with a tie not possible.

Distington travel to Wigan St Cuthbert’s, last year’s beaten finalists Wath Brow go to Hunslet Old Boys and Lowca head to West Bowling.

The ties are due to be played on Saturday, December 13, kick off 2pm.

Meanwhile, Hensingham got back to winning track this week in the John Smith’s Cumberland League Division One.

They hosted Wath Brow Hornets and took command of the game, leading 12-0 by the break and going on to win 30-4.

Jamie Sharp and David Cartmel picked up braces for Hensingham in the victory, with further touchdowns from player/coach Stephen Holgate and Reece Fox. Craig McAvoy was on target with three conversions.

In Division Two, Lowca kept on track for promotion with a 28-6 win over Maryport A.

Lee Morgan led the way for Lowca with two tries. Paul Morgan, Lee Allen and Keith Campbell also added tries, with the latter converting one. Dean Bragg chipped in with two more conversions and Richard Haile one.

Maryport A’s try came courtesy of John Morgan, converted by Ben Waugh.

Flimby also added another win to their successful season, beating visitors Lowca A 40-26.

Carl Grima showed the way to the try line for the village side with a brace of tries. He was followed over the whitewash by Tony Eve, Grant Underwood, David Torley, Grant Mounsey, Ryan Williams and Graham Thompson. Thompson also kicked four conversions.

Frizington were also celebrating two points with a 28-12 success over Great Clifton Lions.

A brace of tries from Sean Dixon aided the Frizington cause, with further touchdowns from Peter Fowler, John Fowler and Ryan Dodgson. The goals were shared out for Frizington with John Close kicking two and Dodgson and Mark Hall on target with one apiece.

Clifton broke through the home defence to score twice, with tries coming from Nicky Wilson, with Michael Hill adding a goal and a penalty.
