Workington Town boss Rotheram targeting Fijian players

Dave Rotheram is targeting a couple of Fijian blockbusters who starred against Workington Town in Sunday’s friendly clash.

The Australian Fijians were 42-6 up early in the second-half when the match was abandoned due to a frozen Derwent Park pitch.

But the Town boss saw enough of the Fijian forwards to believe several could make a major impact in his pack.

“We were out-muscled, which shows we need some bigger blokes,” he admitted. “The Fijians had some good players, skilful, fast and strong.

“We are looking at some of them, and we’ll see what happens on that score.

“We showed some glimpses against them but didn’t have a lot of ball, which didn’t help.”

Hooker James Storer, starting at nine against Town, had played for Fiji in their World Cup semi-final against Australian just two weeks earlier.

While big Tabua Cakacaka, used off the bench, is a familiar face to National League fans as he features for Gateshead Thunder.

Rotheram is also believed to have pinpointed a couple of Tongans during his World Cup stint as Scotland’s assistant coach.
