Wath Brow Hornets beat Millom with last gasp try

A last gasp try saw Wath Brow Hornets clinch victory in their National Conference League Boxing Day derby with Millom.

After leading for much of the first half, Wath Brow faced a Millom comeback that levelled the scores.

And only a touchdown from hooker James Toman in the very last minute of the match, sealed victory for them in a tight game.

Craig Johnstone opened the scoring for the Hornets, on their home turf, as he converted a penalty after 16 minutes.

And shortly after the Hornets opened up an eight point lead thanks to the opening try of the afternoon. It was strong forward Martin Thompson who powered his way over the line to touch down, with Johnstone adding the extras.

But Millom hit back after 28 minutes when sub Graham Lupton crossed the whitewash to bring them back into the match and Paul Evans slotted over the conversion.

It stayed at 8-6 to the home side until the break with both sides battling away at each other’s defence.

After the break Wath Brow tried their hardest to break through the Millom wall but could not find a chink in their armour.

And it was Millom who were to take the lead as Evans slotted over two penalty attempts close together to edged 10-8 in front.

Johnstone drew the two sides level to set up a rousing finale, with a penalty of his own.

The Hornets now threw everything they had at their Copeland neighbours but it looked as though they would have to share the points until the final minute.

Up popped hooker Toman to become the hero of the hour as he crossed for a vital try and a 14-10 victory for Wath Brow to keep them on course for promotion.

The two sides will meet again this coming Saturday, at Wath Brow once more, this time in the preliminary round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.
