Cold spell in Cumbria produces winter wonderland

The recent heavy snow across north and east Cumbria continued one of the coldest winters in living memory producing some spectacular scenes.

And people have been quick to send in some brilliant photographs illustrating just how beautiful our county can be despite the trreacherous conditions.

And please keep them coming! Email them here or send them from your mobile to NSPIX at 85158 and we'll add them to the slideshow. Text t&cs

It was a bitterly cold start to the New Year - the coldest for 50 years in some areas. Shap fell to -10C maintaining a bitingly cold start to the year in that area having been named as one of the coldest places in the country as temperatures fell to -7.6C on New Year’s Eve.

The coldest day of 2008 was November 30 (-4C) and the coldest night was December 1 at - 7C.

The warmest day of last year across the county was July 25 when the temperature hit almost 26C, while the warmest night was July 31 at 18C.

Most people are likely to remember the year – and particularly the summer – as being something of a washout with many of the traditional shows being cancelled.

The wettest day was September 6 when more than 35 mm of rain fell and the total for the year stands at an incredible 1,239 mm.
