My knee has to be rebuilt, says Workington Reds midfielder Johnston

Workington Reds midfielder Craig Johnston requires a full reconstruction of his knee when he goes under the knife.

Johnston, 25, is hoping that surgeons will be able to fix the ligament-torn knee on January 17.

Yesterday doctors told the committed club man that the injury could be worse still.

Whitehaven’s West Cumberland Hospital staff think there could also be some muscle and tendon damage.

Johnston is well-known for not doing anything by halves and this injury confirms that.

It has now been revealed that he has snapped three of his five left knee ligaments, damaged his muscle and possibly received tendon damage.

However, he is trying to remain positive about the situation.

He said: “The pain has stopped, which is a great relief for me. I have been able to hobble around on crutches and go into town.

“The people of Workington have been great with me, wishing me well, which is nice.

“I’m not enjoying being on crutches because it is giving me blisters on my hands but that is the least of my worries.

“I am thinking positively and hopefully I will have the operation next month, which will mean I can get on with the rehabilitation. It all seems a long way away but I can do it.”
