Workington Reds have been boosted by the news key defender Lee Andrews will be back for the trip to Barrow.
The 25-year-old went under the knife last month to help fix a niggling knee problem. The operation, which lasted two hours, was a success and no unexpected surprises were found.
Andrews hasn’t played since the 1-1 draw with King’s Lynn on December 6 but has targeted the FA Trophy second round tie with Cumbrian rivals Barrow as the game he hopes to make his comeback.
He said: “The operation went well and the surgeons didn’t find anything worrying. I was in and out pretty quick but I did get an infection but that has cleared.
“I have been walking with no pain at all now, which is a great relief, and I have been doing some running to build up the fitness levels.”
Andrews, who has a solid on-pitch relationship with Kyle May, is hoping to see the doctor later this week to get the all clear.
He said: “I want to get back in training as quick as I can. I don’t like sitting out games but I have been lucky. We have had two games called off during my spell on the sidelines so I haven’t missed much football.
“I saw the lads beat King’s Lynn in the FA Trophy and I wanted to be out there. Cup competitions are always exciting and I want to have a crack at Barrow.
“I don’t know if I will be fully fit by the time the game comes around but I am definitely aiming to play some part.”
Darren Campion has been deputising in the centre of defence in Andrews’ absence. The 20-year-old on-loan from Carlisle has played twice but Andrews wants his shirt back.
He said: “Every footballer wants to play and I am no different. I don’t expect to walk back into the side but I want to be involved and I want to get my shirt back.”
