Westwood move could see Carlisle United make £1 million

CARLISLE United could be set for a £1 million windfall if former ‘keeper Keiren Westwood makes a big-money move to a top-flight club this month.

Reports yesterday linked the former Blues star – now at Coventry – with a lucrative switch to the Premier League, with Newcastle, Everton and Spurs all said to be interested in the 24-year-old.

The Sky Blues are likely to demand more than £4 million for the Eire prospect, who has shone for Chris Coleman’s side in the Championship since his £750,000 summer switch from Brunton Park.

And such a fee would net United nearly £1m as they have a 25% sell-on clause in the ex-Man City player’s contract, which is triggered by any amount which exceeds what Carlisle have received for Westwood.

“It is quite exciting for us if Keiren does move on,” said chief executive David Allen. “It shows that even when these young players move on to further themselves, it is important the club still benefits in the long run.”

Manager Greg Abbott added: “I have had a few phonecalls telling me Keiren is going here and going there.

“If it happens, there will be a nice knock-on for us which would give us a bit of money to look to strengthen.

“We have got a plan if we do get some money that way and how to spend it. But we just have to wait and see.”

It is understood United will make between £640,000 and £750,000 on Westwood from the original transfer, depending on how many appearances he makes for the Sky Blues.
