A REVAMP of Workington town centre’s roads is expected to begin on Sunday.
Cumbria County Council will be carrying out the £630,000 improvements to Murray Road, Finkle Street and Pow Street by installing traffic calming measures and creating pedestrian crossing points.
The work will take place on eight Sundays between January and June 30 in two phases.
During both phases, buses will have unrestricted access and move through the Murray Road closure to and from the Murray Road bus station from and to Oxford Street, on their established routes.
During phase two, vehicles wanting to access Brow Top and Derwent Street will be able to pass through the temporary road closure on Murray Road only at the discretion of the contractor.
A council spokesman said the scheme would improve the look of the area, make it safer for pedestrians and enhance people’s shopping experience.
The quality and standard of paving materials will match those used in the rest of the ‘new’ town centre.
A Traffic Regulation Order was approved by the county council’s local committee for Allerdale in 2007.
It will make it clearer where various parking/loading activities can take place.
Additional parking for the mobility impaired and loading/unloading facilities will also be provided.
Improvements, which will cost £630,000, will include carriageways, new kerbs, resurfacing works and remarking the roads.
The council also expects to carry out works on the footways in front of each shop.
