Kendal Calling, the stars answer
Last updated 21:11, Thursday, 27 March 2008
There’s a very funky flavour to this year’s Kendal Calling festival, on Friday, August 1 to Sunday, August 3.
Event organisers have announced Dizzee Rascal, DJ Yoda, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Scratch Perverts, Super Furry Animals for the third event.
Kendal Calling is ranked by The Independent newspaper as one of the “five best pop gigs”, on a par with The Big Chill and Leeds’ Across the Tracks.
The festival was founded and is run by two of the youngest licensed promoters in the country, Ben Robinson and Andy Smith, as Evolved Addict and Fugative Sounds.
The independent event gives a platform for local talent as well as bringing national established and up-and-coming music acts to the area.
The organisers reckon the line up is “testament to originality, artistic integrity and the need to party, burning bright against the dross of bland corporate hum drum that litter the festival season”.
After two successful sold-out events Kendal Calling is doubling its capacity to 4,000.
Other bands announced so far are Kendal’s very own pirates of the airwaves British Sea Power, 20:20 Soundsystem, Howard Marks, Bookhouse Boys, Lowline (featuring Nick McCabe of The Verve), The Keptones, Lo-Fidelity Allstars, Sex & Circuitry, Frank Sidebottom and 3 Daft Monkeys.
Ben and Andy say that, as organisers, they’ve always placed quality and originality above size and hype.
“I think with the addition of cutting edge and quality acts such as Dizzee Rascal and Super Furry Animals this years event really cements that. We honestly can’t wait.
“There is so much bounce and bravado about this year’s line up, I cannot wait to see all these acts in one field.
“With the return of BSP following their awesome third album I think it will be a great third for us both, as they say three is a magic number.”
