Workington Transport Heritage Trust

WORKINGTON Transport Heritage Trust has been named as one of our community champions.

It has been awarded £3,000 for its work during the floods.

Secretary Alistair Grey said he was delighted with the cash.

The group put on extra free buses to ferry people from the south side of the River Derwent to the north side and to Maryport on Boxing Day, after Workington Bridge was closed and Northside Bridge collapsed in the November floods.

Mr Grey said he never thought the trust would be given the cash, as members had not done much more than they normally do over Christmas.

He added: “This money has given us a lifeline because funds are always tight for us.

“We are really grateful for it because we can now look to find a place that will house us instead of having offices in different places.

“We didn’t think we had done anything out of the ordinary because we always put on the Boxing Day buses.

“This year we put on extra buses and went further, going to Maryport instead of stopping at Seaton.”

Around 440 people took advantage of the service, which beat 2008’s figure of 300 people using the service.
