Play’s cultural connections

A Polish woman’s experience of rural England is the theme of a play touring West Cumbria next week.

The Polish Play tells the story of Stash, a farmer from a village on the Polish-Ukranian border and his daughter Martha, as she begins work as an au pair.

Brought to the county by Arts Out West, the play has been written specifically for village halls. Writer and director Gavin Stride explained: “Village halls allow for a less formal, more relaxed atmosphere. The audience and theatre company enter through the same door and share the same space.

“That offers unique opportunities, and this is an evening about the things we share in common as much as the things that make us special. It is about our place in the world, what it is to leave your home, and crosses the boundaries of country and culture.”

Arts Out West was formed a decade ago, and last season more than 50 public performances took place in 20 halls across Allerdale and Copeland. Local promoters decide what to show each season, and the scheme doesn’t just bring theatre to villages; dance, music, comedy and puppet shows have also made their mark. The hall committee promotes it in their local area and looks after the artists and the audience on the night.

Arts Out West co-ordinator Bob Pritchard said: “It’s a different experience to a large theatre. There is a more friendly and direct atmosphere on the rural touring circuit, and artists find they get more audience interaction. We often arrange the chairs and tables in a cabaret style to make it more informal.

“Arts Out West also makes the village hall a more vibrant, vital part of the community. And from the villagers’ point of view, it’s fantastic to have these quality, professional performances right on their doorstep.”

The Polish Play is visiting the following villages between April 23-27: Drigg, Kirkland, Ireby, Brigham and Haile. Call Bob Pritchard on 01946 593040.
