Today we report on a brave woman who has dared to speak out about the years of sexual abuse she suffered.
‘Sandra’ (not her real name) was one of four women attacked by Robert Campbell Smith.
All too often, the people responsible for these evil crimes are people who are held in a position of trust by the abused.
The victims then feel too frightened to report what has happened, or that no one will believe them if they do speak out. ‘Sandra’ only came forward to give evidence against Smith after another woman had spoken up. Now she is speaking about her ordeal to encourage others not to fear reporting attacks.
‘Sandra’ is now rebuilding her life hundreds of miles away from Carlisle, where the abuse took place, but is full of praise for the assistance she received from the city’s police force.
Our policing and legal systems come in for criticism all too often, but it is reassuring when careful considerate and compassionate detective work can achieve
People like ‘Sandra’ are victims of the worst crimes imaginable. But hopefully, with help, they can overcome such appalling experiences and need not live their whole lives as a victim.
Smith was jailed for 12 years for his crimes. It is incredibly difficult for ‘Sandra’ and others to step forward, but the bravery she and other women show helps keep scum like him off our streets.
