Haven finish strongly after shaky start to 2008

Published 23 December 2008

I HOPE Howard Hill remembers that I told him he was my player-of-the-year when he signed a new two-year deal, shortly before he was struck by serious illness.THE play-off wins at Leigh and then Halifax a week later stand out for me. I thought Haven would win at Hilton Park, and put my money where my mouth was with a small wager.HAVEN never seemed to lose to Batley – until this year. The Cumbrians were in disarray when the Bulldogs arrived at the Recre in March. They were appalling, and Batley thoroughly deserved their 19-6 win.DAVID Ford, without a doubt. It was not so much that the prop suddenly showed a massive improvement over his 2007 form. But he continued with a steady rate of progression and repaid Stokes’ faith in him with some fine performances.WHERE do I start? There was a degree of scepticism on the terraces over the signing of Tane Manihera, but that soon evaporated when he got on the pitch. The veteran enjoyed a great season.GED Stokes towered above rival NL1 coaches in his achievements, so it was astonishing that he was not even shortlisted for the official RFL coaching award.NO doubt about the best story. Rugby league is only a game. It’s not life or death. When Howard Hill phoned to ask me to pass on his thanks to staff at the West Cumberland Hospital for their help in his treatment, it clearly signalled he was out of danger. And that was the best news anyone could hear.GREGG McNally scored eight tries in nine games last year, and every touchdown proved vital. He set off in style, of course, with a televised hat-trick against Salford.DON’T be daft. This has to be Super Gregg by a distance.TYRONE Dalton may not be there from the off next term but I would not be surprised to see him make an impact at some point.
