Brentford make move for Carlisle Utd's Cleveland Taylor

Brentford have emerged as the first serious contenders to sign Cleveland Taylor after lodging a firm enquiry for the wantaway Carlisle United winger.

The Bees – who United face in their first game of the League One season next weekend – are keen on the former Scunthorpe man, who has filed a transfer request at Brunton Park for personal reasons.

There has not yet been a concrete offer for Taylor from the Griffin Park club but it is understood they are hopeful of doing a deal with the Cumbrians for the 25-year-old.

Taylor joined United in a £65,000 deal in January last year and Carlisle are keen to recoup most of that sum before they part with the wide man, who has a year left on his contract.

He has been in good form in the Blues’ pre-season games and manager Greg Abbott described his display in the 2-1 defeat to Hull as his best for the club.

That led to renewed optimism that popular winger Taylor – who won seven player-of-the-year awards last season – would rip up his transfer request and remain with United in 2009/10.

  • United are holding an open training session at Brunton Park next Tuesday.

Fans can watch the squad train from 10.30am-11.45am.

Have your say

It doesn't make sense to me if Cleveland decides to go to Brentford. His reasons for leaving United is his Granny and being too far from her. Surely Brentford would be just as far from Granny albeit in a southerly direction. Come on Cleve stay put!!
