West Cumbria must be declared a disaster zone

I WOULD like to applaud your editorial (Times & Star, December 18), which calls for West Cumbria to be declared a disaster zone.

Gordon and Tony must keep their promises

OUR MP and Prime Minister said during the early days of the West Cumbria floods that they would still support you even after the cameras have left. The truth seems somewhat different.

Trains need to be shored up against the tides

THE grim news of waiting two years for a permanent traffic bridge to be built is beyond belief, but what concerns me and should concern the people using the train to ferry them to Workington is the railway line.

Stop whingeing about the time it takes to build a road bridge

FORGETTING the inconveniences they suffer are as nothing compared to being out of your home for months or years, the professional whingers and rumour-mongers raise their voices.

Fantastic efforts to bring Cockermouth back to life

AS A regular shopper in Cockermouth, I, like thousands of others, watched in disbelief as the TV news reports showed torrents of water raging down Main Street.

Tireless work by one Cockermouth woman helped hundreds

DURING the floods when clothes and goods were donated it was thanks to a lady called Caroline Craig who organised the clothes and, with the help of volunteers, these were distributed to the flood victims of Cockermouth.

When will we get to grips with the flooding?

European issue must be considered

I REFER to the final letters (Times & Star, December 11) headed respectively “Coal comments” and “Political Xmas” and leave readers to draw their own conclusions as to the content and what that says of the writers.

No politeness from Allerdale councillors

REGARDING the possibility of providing Blackberries to Copeland councillors, I would like to say that here in Allerdale I emailed my local councillor a fortnight ago and as yet I have not received a response.

Focus on health resources where need is greatest

REGARDING “It’s a short life” – in Maryport” (Times & Star, December 11), your article, drawing attention to the fact that six towns in West Cumbria are among those with the lowest life expectation in England, should ring alarm bells for the public and health providers in West Cumbria.

West Cumbria disaster has turned motorists into cash cows

IT SEEMS that we motorists are once again being targeted at a time when hundreds are forced to spend hours crawling through the area surrounding the only open road bridge over the Derwent near Cockermouth.

Civic thanks to Allerdale council workers

IT IS with extreme gratitude that we write to publicly thank, unreservedly, the executive management, ward councillors, officers and staff of Allerdale council who, during the days since the flooding, have worked so hard for residents in the borough.
