The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations were a great reminder to us that community spirit is alive and well in West Cumbria.

While other areas of the country were surprised that people who barely knew each other but lived side by side could get together to celebrate, we knew all along that the jubilee would reinforce the attitudes and characters of West Cumbrians.

All around the area, young and old celebrated the extended bank holiday in style, with parties taking place in streets, halls and clubs.

Although it was about paying tribute to a queen who has compassionately and loyally reigned over us for 60 years, it was also a chance for us to celebrate the sense of community that helps many of us to get through the day.

In these times of economic hardship, it’s easy to batten down the hatches and not let anyone in. But a simple smile as you pass your neighbour can underline that we’re all in this together.

West Cumbria’s jubilee celebrations have seen many neighbours become firm friends with people they had previously only said hello to, while others have decided to hold regular events to keep the community spirit going.

The jubilee joy allowed us to forget our worries – if only for a moment – and let down our hair.

It marked the first major event in a bumper year for our nation, with the Olympics just around the corner.

Let’s hope 2012 will be the year that makes Britain great again.
