Workington Reds boss Darren Edmondson lauded his side’s heroics as they battled with 10 men to a stunning draw with runaway leaders Chester.
“I could not be any prouder as a manager of my team than I am now,” he said.
“We would have taken a point with 11 men, but to do it with 10, and to have a couple of good chances on top of that was incredible.
“We pressed, and we put Chester under a lot of pressure. It was backs against the wall, and we had to dig deep, but we found the energy and belief to hold on.
“We showed a lot of character to not just come back from a goal down, with only 10 men, but we then pushed on.”
Referee Peter Wright will today review video footage of Lee Andrews’ controversial red card.
Adjudged to be the last man, Andrews collided with Chester’s Nathan Jarman with just five minutes on the clock. Wright quickly produced a red card, to the dismay of Edmondson. But, after watching the footage, which was filmed by a student at Lakes College, where Edmondson is a tutor, the 41-year-old said there is clear evidence that will exonerate Andrews.
Edmondson hopes Wright will help clear the defender of any ban and said: “I have seen a replay of the incident, and Lee is a couple of yards ahead of Nathan. He’s shielding the ball, and is about to knock it back to the keeper when there’s a coming together.
“I have made my views known, but I can only say so much without being punished. The referee will now have a look at our evidence, and will make a decision from there.”
Gari Rowntree was the unlikely scorer, blazing a stunning 20-yard drive into the roof of Chester’s net, after Marc Williams gave the visitors the lead on 50 minutes.
Edmondson said: “Gari was outstanding. His determination and drive was the Gari of two years ago.
“His goal was superb, and a fitting way for us to earn an important point.”
