Radio conquered television as a CFM team beat the stars of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks in a charity football match.

Hundreds flocked to Workington Reds’ Borough Park ground on Saturday afternoon to see an 11-goal thriller, with the CFM Allstars winning 6-5.

The match was in aid of CFM’s Cash For Kids appeal, which helps young people in Cumbria.

The off-field battle was won by Hollyoaks’ hunks as the cast posed for photos and signed autographs for their excited fans.

The Hollyoaks team included James Conway from Talkin, near Brampton, who was educated at Austin Friars School in Carlisle.

James, who uses the stage name James Atherton, plays Will Savage in the show.

“It’s good to be back in Cumbria,” he said. “Unfortunately I won’t have time to get home this weekend as I’m filming on Sunday morning.”

Hollyoaks were captained by cast member Nick Pickard, who plays Tony Hutchinson.

“I thought it was a great game,” said Nick. “It’s fun for the crowd when you have a high-scoring game. We were unlucky to lose. But they had some decent players.

“The boys had a great time. We play at least once a month. It’s lovely that people have come down to support the charity. We always get good support when we come to Cumbria.”

The Hollyoaks team also included Tom Scurr, who plays Barney Harper- McBride, Keiron Richardson, who plays Ste Hay, and Jonny Clarke, who plays Bart McQueen. They were managed by Jimmy McKenna, who plays Jack Osborne.

CFM’s team included four Workington Reds players and manager Darren Edmondson.

CFM were 2-0 up at half-time before a Hollyoaks comeback sparked a thrilling nine-goal second half.

Darren said: “It was a good match for the fans. You want lots of goals in a game like this. We were happy to help support a local charity.”

The match was organised by Diane Campbell, CFM’s Cash for Kids charity manager.

“It’s been a really successful day,” she said. “We couldn’t have done it without Workington Reds.”

After the match there was a fundraising party with the players at Chasers Bar.
