Gary Charlton is savouring the scrap for the half-back berths at Workington Town following last week’s signing of James Coyle.

The ex-Wigan man will be up against Carl Forber and Peter Lupton for the two play-making places, and Charlton reckons the stiff competition can only be good for Town.

“James Coyle is up for it and talks a good game,” the coach said.

“He comes across very well and I think he will be a good asset. We’ll have the three lads fighting for two spots, and that it what we are looking for.”

Lupton and Forber saw plenty of action in the halves last term, though former Super League regular Lupton is also comfortable at loose-forward.

Coyle is a former England Academy Under-17s skipper who went on to play a handful of top-flight games for Wigan before featuring for Oldham and Barrow.

He joined Widnes for the 2011 campaign and took a year out last term while he established a shop-fitting business. “He is a strong, nuggety half-back who they reckon has good pace and will direct a team around the field,” Charlton added.
