Cumbria last night reached the Rugby League 9s finals at Headingley for a second successive season after pipping St Helens to a top four finish.

The county went in to the last weekly round at Wigan trailing Saints, in fourth, by a point, but beat them in their opening game.

Both went on to lose to Wigan and Warrington, which meant Cumbria will move in to the finals next Tuesday.

“It was a great effort from the lads,” said Barry Richardson, Haven chief executive.

“We can be very proud of those lads who have played for Cumbria over the last four weeks. They have done exceptionally well.”

Meanwhile, a review of the proposed Pow Beck community stadium scheme is to be carried out after Haven’s main sponsor NMP agreed to take over project management from Copeland Council.

The review will look at all aspects of the scheme, including its viability, but insiders are confident the figures will stack up on the £5.5 million scheme.

One said: “The Pow Beck Valley scheme is still alive and we are looking to move it forward.”
